10:30 – 10:45 AM   Break

10:45 – 11:45 AM   Business meeting

Main Program Information

Gain insight into how a new medical device goes from being an idea to becoming a reality.  What type of process does a new product go through in its years of development before it reaches the floor of your medical center?  The program will provide an overview of how innovations and market needs spur new product development.

The talk will highlight the latest system created for regenerative medicine:  the new Quantum Cell Expansion System.  Research in cell therapies shows promising treatment possibilities: to treat neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s Disease, to regenerate cardiac tissue following myocardial infarction, to reverse pancreatic disease in Diabetes, and to heal Graft-versus-Host-Disease following transplantation.  These therapies rely on large-scale cell culture, or cell expansion, to produce the required therapeutic dose.  However, isolating and growing stem cells has posed many challenges, and millions of stem cells are required for a single treatment.

In order to meet such a clinical demand, CaridianBCT has developed a method for the ex vivo expansion of mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow using an automated hollow fiber bioreactor system. The extremely compact sterile bioreactor culture system has rapidly grown therapeutic dosages of mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow aspirates within 14-29 days in experimental studies.

This new product from CaridianBCT, a worldwide leader in blood component technologies and therapeutics, is currently being released internationally.  Join us on November 19th for a program on innovative product development.

Security/parking instructions

CaridianBCT is easily reached from I-25/W. 6th Ave or West Colfax.  From Simms Street, go east on W. Collins Ave and follow the signs to Visitor Parking on your right.  Visitor parking is located closest to the 10810 building with the ramp on the front.  Please check in first with reception in the 10811 building to the north, just across the circle drive with the flagpoles.  Once you receive your visitor’s badge, proceed to the 10810 building where you parked.  Go up the ramp in the front of the building to the second floor where you will be met at the door and directed to the Learning Center and the Library.  Please try to arrive between 8 and 8:15 if you are attending the education program, or close to 9 am if you are coming for the tour and main program.

November CCML meeting

Posted by memorizingmo on November 4, 2010

Please join us for the November meeting of the Colorado Council of Medical Librarians, to be held at Caridian BCT and hosted by Linda Van Wert.

Date: Friday*, November 19th, 2010

Location: Caridian BCT

10811 W. Collins Ave.
Lakewood, CO 80215

Agenda

8:15 – 9:00 AM      Education Program

CCML members will share information gained from their attendance at

professional meetings.

9:00 – 9:30 AM      Networking and refreshments

9:30 – 10:30 AM     Main Program

Frank Corbin, Medical Specialist Liaison/Cell Expansion Project Leader, “Adult Stem Cells, Regenerative Medicine, and Stem Cell Expansion: The Potential of a New Bioreactor System”

10:30 – 10:45 AM   Break

10:45 – 11:45 AM   Business Meeting

Main Program Information

Adult stem cells (hematopoietic stem cells from blood or mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow) play a role in tissue repair and regeneration and have been used in transplantation for more than 40 years.  Current research with adult stem cells has provided exciting new possibilities:  to treat neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s Disease,  to regenerate cardiac tissue following myocardial infarction, to reverse pancreatic disease in Diabetes, and to heal Graft-versus-Host-Disease following transplantation.    However, isolating and growing adult stem cells has posed a many challenges, and millions of stem cells are required for a single treatment.

The large numbers of Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) which are required in some protocols (>200 million per patient) make standard culture conditions problematic and expensive due to the need for extensive personnel resources and the high potential of contamination.  To meet such clinical demand, a fast, robust, and sterile closed-loop MSC expansion method is optimal.  CaridianBCT has developed a method for the ex vivo expansion of MSCs from both bone marrow mononuclear cells and whole bone marrow (BM) using an automated hollow fiber bioreactor system, the Quantum Cell Expansion System. The extremely compact sterile bioreactor culture system is connected to computer-controlled media and gas exchangers.  In experimental studies, therapeutic dosages of MSC have been rapidly grown from single 12-25mL BM aspirates within 14-29 days.

This new product from CaridianBCT, a worldwide leader in blood component technologies and therapeutics, is currently being released internationally.  Join us on November 19th for a program on stem cells and the process of innovative product development to meet market needs.
